My Life

Hi, I'm Dasha Elin Zerboni. I was born in America. Now, let me tell you a little about my life.

I was born in April 2005.  When I was a baby, the first thing I saw was my mom and dad smiling at me. It made me laugh.  But, not really. I couldn't.  Then, I tried to look at my mouth to see what was wrong. But, my chin didn't go down that far. I tried to stand up, so I could yell, "I'm born, I'm born!" But, I couldn't. My arms and legs weren't sturdy and strong.  I tried to talk, but all that came out was a little cloud. I looked at that cloud. And, it disappeared. Then, my mom hugged me and so did my dad. "Who are these people?" I thought. Until they took me home. We played and played and played. It was the best thing in my whole life. At least, I thought.

As I grew older, things changed. I was able to talk and stand up and walk. I was able to do all sorts of things, such as gymnastics, swimming and violin.  Violin seemed hard at first. But, then I practiced more. Now I can play Bach's "Ave Maria." I love violin!

Now, I'm seven years old. My favorite color is green, not brown. My baby brother was born. He's four, almost five. He can walk and talk and do violin too. But, he's still working on gymnastics and swimming. We like to play cars and make towns in his room. And, do front rolls and back rolls and cartwheels in the hallway. Our favorite game is Horseopoly. It's like Monopoly, but you buy horses instead. At a higher price.

One of the hardest things in my life was teaching my brother math, and moving to a new house. I also learned how to deal with fragile things, like stuff made out of clay and glass. And, other fragile materials.

I love reading. It's my favorite subject in school. But, PE is catching up.

I'm going into second grade now. It's SO exciting. Some things bum me out, like having my best friends in a different class, meeting new kids and having to make new friends. And, I'm always thinking about what will happen next. It makes it harder to focus on my work.  But some things make me excited, such as getting a new backpack, moving up a level in reading, and, well, making new friends.

I hope you go through those changes too. It's pretty fun and interesting.  It's tough to live a good long life, but if you work hard at it, you'll get good at it. And, it'll be easy as pie.

I'll keep you posted on how things go for me.

The end.

Kaya Meets Tito

Once upon a time, there was a Native American girl named, Kaya. She had a horse named Stepshigh, which was an Appaloosa mustang.

Kaya was nine years old so she was old enough to work like other Native American kids.  One day when she was sewing bear claws on a buckskin dress, Stepshigh whinnied.  Then, Kaya remembered when her mom got captured by enemy raiders. Now that was really scary. Toeta, her father, was now her only parent.
She liked visiting her grandparents a lot. Her grandmother, Katsa, told great stories. Especially, about her visions.

"Toeta," said Kaya. "Can Stepshigh and I go to New Mexico? I'd like to see my friend Josephina." "OK," said Toeta, "but be sure to pack a tee-pee, food and clothes with you. And bring Stepshigh. He can carry those things. You can carry your violin, your math workbooks and a pencil."  "OK,"said Kaya. "Maybe while I'm there, I'll buy some clothes," she said. "And trade some hides for beads," she added.

So, the very next day, Kaya packed a tee-pee, clothes, luggage, and packed them up on Stepshigh. Before she left, she said "Good-bye" to Toeta, Katsa, and the twins, Sparrow and Wingfeather. Then, she and Stepshigh took off.

Stepshigh ran easily with the load. On Kaya's back was a little green backpack with her violin and workbooks, and extra pencils, and a little mini sharpener, just in case the pencils broke. Around her waist was a basket with blueberries. She could pick more when she got there.

Finally, she reached a hotel. "This would be a nice place to stay." But, beside the hotel was a forest. "I remember, I have a tee-pee" she said. So, instead of going into the hotel for a room, she went into the forest and set up her tee-pee. It was very hard. It kept collapsing. So, she and Stepshigh went in to little cabins that she made out of chopped trees.

A monkey came along. He said, "You seem like you need a little help putting up a tee-pee." "Sure," said Kaya. "I'll pay you back somehow."  So the monkey easily put up the tee-pee. "How did you do that so quickly?" said Kaya. "It's a little secret - I've been taking classes and practicing for years. I can put up a tent, so how much different can a tee-pee be? They both start with "t". And, tee-pees are just tents for Native Americans."

Soon a big clomping noise occurred. "Oh-No, the Sheriff," said the monkey. "You see, I'm a slave, and I work for the McDaolls."  "Don't worry, I'll help you get away," said Kaya.  "You can hide in the trees above my tee-pee.  I'll give you an Yuka root hide. You can cover it over your body.  I'll take my bow and arrows and shoot them at the sheriff. That will pay him back for capturing you as a slave. You're nice. You can live with me instead."  "Thanks," said the monkey, "First, tell me your name."  "My name's Kaya, and this is my horse, Stepshigh, and my dog, Tatlo," said Kaya.  "My name is Tito," said the monkey.   "Great, Tito. Now hide. He's coming closer; I can see his face." she said.

"Wait, that's my dad," said Kaya. "Your dad's the sheriff?" said Tito.  "I'll tell him not to kidnap you," said Kaya.  So Tito was freed and got to live with Kaya as her third pet.

"Thanks again," said Tito.

The End.

Human Discovery

Background: Little girl is at human discovery science camp. They study about the skeletal system, brain, about mucus and cells, and everything there is to know about the human body. Little girl is excited. She reads books, and learns about red blood cells and white blood cells, about kidneys and the heart. Little girl wants to be a doctor some day.

Little Girl: Mom, do you want to make a human body?

Mom: OK, but not today. It's late. It's time for bed.

Little Girl: No, not today. It takes nine months.

Mom: Oh?

Little Girl: Yes, and we need to get 206 bones.

Mom: 206? I thought babies have 300 bones. And, they fuse, so adults end up with 206.

Little Girl: Yes, but we only need 206 bones according to the recipe. And, lots of blood. Where do we get blood?

Mom:  There's a recipe?

Little Girl: Yes, it's in my science journal. I have it all written down.

Fuge's New Friend.

Once upon a time, there was a cat named "Fuge" who lived with his owners, Apa Adi and Grandma Ira. They took great care of him.

Fuge is a Russian blue breed of cat. He's about a year old.  Fuge likes to climb chairs.

One day when Fuge was climbing on his favorite chair, out of the window he saw a squirrel.  It was a very nasty squirrel. Now, when the squirrel saw Fuge, it ran into the neighbor's yard, breaking their favorite dolphin statue.

Now this squirrel was grey, with beady eyes that looked almost as red as rubies.

Fuge snickered as the neighbor yelled at the squirrel and shooed it away with a broom.  "That's what that squirrel deserves," thought Fuge, "a yell and a shoo with the broom."

So, the squirrel bounded into a tree and threw nuts at Fuge.  Fuge ran out into the yard. The squirrel ran toward it.

But, the squirrel said, "I'm sad. That woman shooed me with a broom and knocked my tail. It really hurts."  "Don't worry. Maybe I can take you home. My owners may like it if I have a new friend." said Fuge. And, Apa Adi and Grandma Ira were happy that Fuge had a new friend. They fed the squirrel just like they fed Fuge.

One day, a dog came and barked at the squirrel. The squirrel was very scared, so it ran into the house and broke one of the flower vases. But, Apa Adi and Grandma Ira weren't mad. They said, "That flower vase has been very, very useless. The flowers were dead anyways, and we were going to throw them out."  Then we were going to sell the flower vase. So, it's okay you broke it. We can just throw away the scraps now.

The squirrel was happy he didn't get in much trouble. One day when the Grandparents were out for a walk, the dog came by again.  The squirrel didn't want to be around this dog, that barked all the time.  Fuge helped his new friend by chasing the dog away.

But, wait! The dog had pulled the leash out of its owner's hands. Fuge thought it was a very awful dog.  So, Fuge quickly ran after the dog following its footsteps. The dog was pleading with its owner for a treat. "That's a bad owner," thought Fuge. "It's giving the dog a treat, when it just pulled the leash from his hands, AND barked at poor little squirrel."  Fuge noticed the owner was the neighbor.

The neighbor saw the squirrel and said, "That nasty beast! What type of pet is that? Who has a squirrel for a pet? "Apa Adi and Grandma Ira are crazy," thought the dog. "That's not nice," thought Fuge. "You are being very mean to my owners. And, you barked at poor little squirrel!"  The dog just barked again. It was trying to protect its owner.

Fuge fought back and the dog lost his bark. It couldn't bark anymore. So, the neighbor moved.

The end.

Chocolate's Birthday Party

Once upon a time, there was a chocolate Labrador retriever puppy named, "Chocolate."  He lived in an apartment building that he loved. It had a garden fit for a dog.He was owned by a teenage girl named Lizzy.  Lizzy had blond hair and loved wearing summer dresses and sandals.

It was Springtime, and flowers were blooming everywhere. They were sparkling like green emeralds, red rubies, blue sapphires and silver diamonds, glittering like stars.

Chocolate was two months old.  When Lizzy was taking Chocolate for his daily walk, Chocolate saw a squirrel. Chocolate knew it was bad to pull the leash out of his owners hands, so he let the squirrel go back into the huckleberry bushes.

Down the trail was a creek. Chocolate could hear the croaks of frogs and chirps of crickets. Then he heard a big splash. He sighed. It was just a frog leaping from lily pad to lily pad.

When they arrived home from their walk, Chocolate saw that Lizzy had a special surprise for him. There were red, blue, yellow, green and purple streamers hanging from the walls. There was even a little table in the middle of the room, with a puppy table cloth, and presents on it wrapped in beautiful wrapping paper and tied with beautiful, big bows.

Chocolate could not believe his eyes!  "Here we are," said Lizzy. "I prepared a special surprise birthday party for you. It's your birthday today. Didn't you know that?" she said. Now Chocolate understood. But, where was the cake. Every birthday party needs cake!

He barked at Lizzy.  "I know, you're asking me where the cake is," she said. "At this birthday party, I hid the cake in the kitchen because I want it to be an extra special surprise. I don't want you to see it." she continued.  "And see those presents? They're from all your puppy friends. They'll be here any minute," she said.  As she stopped talking, "DING-DONG!" The doorbell rang. "Our guests must be here already," Lizzy said. "Let's go see who it is," she continued.

"Look," said Lizzy as she opened the door. "It's Spot, and her owner Charles," she said. Chocolate jumped up yapping. He had known Spot since puppy preschool.  Spot was his best friend in preschool.

"OK, how about we start the games right now. We can play on the puppy playground until everyone gets here," she said.  Once they reached the playground, the two dogs sniffed the air. Everything smelled like dog bones.  "We dyed the air so it smells like dog bones," Lizzy explained to Charles. As she spoke, "DING-DONG!"  The puppies raced out of the playground to the door.

Then it rang again, "DING-DONG!"  Lizzy opened the door. "Look, it's your old friend, Wag, and Thomas his owner. Now you can all go back to playing in the puppy playground," she said. Then, Chocolate followed by Spot, lastly Wag, tumbled running toward the puppy playground doors.  "Why does it smell like dog bones?" barked Wag.

After playing for a while, "DING-DONG!" the loud doorbell rang again. Then, three times more -"DING-DONG, DING-DONG, DING-DONG!!!"  More guests have arrived. Lizzy heard a yap outside the door. Wag, Chocolate and Spot raced to the door, knocking each other down.  Lizzy said, "Oh look, it's Bear." Bear was an Australian shepherd.  "And, look. His owner Rachel," said Lizzy, pointing to the girl next to Bear.  The dogs all raced back to the playground, while Rachel, Thomas, Charles and Lizzy talked.

Again, after one hour, "DING-DONG!" Lizzy opened the door and the last guests stepped in. They were two cute chihuahua puppies named Chewy and Chicka, and their owner Kirsty.

The two little chihuahuas went to the table. All the guests had arrived. "Doggy-bone time," said Lizzy, as she passed out doggy bone pizza. She took out a tray with a white cake on it. The cake had a picture of Chocolate, Wag, Spot, Bear, Chewy and Chicka, made out of frosting and marshmallow.

When they were done eating, they made their own dog toys, and painted food bowls.

Finally, it was time to leave.

As they left, the dogs asked, "Chocolate, what did you wish for when blowing out the candles on your cake?"  "It's a big secret," said Chocolate.

Now do you wonder what Chocolate wished for? I know - another birthday party!

Flexible's Adventures II, A Race in New York

Once upon a time, there was a silver Bay mustang named "Flexible." He loved magic, but mostly fairies.

One day, when Flexible was in the pasture, a fairy was singing in the bushes. She asked him to go to Ireland with her. He did, and he was in a horse show there...and won! When they came back to England, the fairy, who was named Samantha, told him she would take him to race in New York next.

Today, Flexible was grazing in the pasture again, when Samantha, the show horse fairy, flew out of the huckleberry bushes. "Remember I told you we would go to a race in New York?" she said. "Let's go to fairy land to pack up," she shouted loudly. Samantha quickly waved her wand, and they were off to fairy land..again.

"Can I take Flexible to New York to race?" Samantha asked King Oberon for permission.  "Yes," he said. "But you will have to get help again," said Queen Tatiana. "How about Penny the pony fairy come with you to help," she said. "She helped you last time, didn't she?" said the queen. "Yes, she did," said Samantha.

"Maybe Helena the horseback riding fairy can help you too," said the queen as she pointed her wand to a beautiful fairy wearing tan pants tucked into big black boots up to her knees. She wore a sturdy brown riding helmet with a picture of a horse on it. "That riding helmet is very special," said Queen Tatiana. "It makes sure that everything in the stables is reined in," she said. A couple days ago, the goblins stole the helmet for themselves. Thankfully, two girls, Ivy and Julie found the goblins, bumped them in a wastebasket, and retrieved the helmet. All while he was riding a horse named "Mischief."

"Let's not waste time," said the Queen. "Why don't you three go to the tack room and pack up," she said. "Sure," said Samantha, leading Flexible, Penny and Flexible to the back of the quiet barn behind the castle.

Helena opened the door to a little staircase, went up the stairs, and into a room. Inside was riding helmets, halters, reins, saddles, treats, and luggage carriers for travels. There were even keys to a trailer, and keys to a magic bus, and magical airplane too.

Helena took out a pink backpack covered in pictures of horses - black horses, brown horses, white horses, horses of every shape and color. Some were running, some were jumping, some were galloping, cantering and trotting.

"Let's put in give apples, three carrots, three ham and tuna sandwiches and a ticket to the coffee bar," said Helena. "Now, let's go to the magical trailer," said Samantha. And off they went.

Helena and Samantha went into the front seats, while Penny stayed in the back with Flexible. Soon they were flying in the magical trailer from England to New York.

"From England to New York, from England to New York, from England to New York. That's where we're going, from England to New York," sang Samantha. "We're flying through the air, we're flying through the air, that's what we're doing, we're flying through the air," Samantha continued.

They landed in New York. Just like before, they were a day early so they could have time to settle in.

They transformed back to real size and led Flexible to the grooming room to clean him up.  When they were done, they led him to his stall and filled his food buckets, with oats and fresh water. Then, they put a fresh blanket from a blanket pile to make sure he wasn't cold.

"Let me ride him this time," said Helena. "All right," said Samantha, "But, next time, I'll ride."

The day of the race arrived. Samantha and Helena tacked Flexible up, and Helena got on. They cantered onto the field, and got into the starting gate, number 27. Samantha and Helena got their own seats. "107 and 108," said the manager, pointing to two seats in the back row.

And, they're off! Flexible ran and ran. Flexible was winning! But, then Flexible saw a goblin; he was trying to knock Helena off his back.  Flexible reared at the goblin, but then focused back on the race again.  Flexible was nose to nose with Springtime,  white horse with black spots.  But, Flexible was getting tired. Springtime passed him.

Up ahead, the finish line was getting closer and closer. Another goblin appeared in front of him! Flexible reared at the goblin, knocking the goblin off his feet.  The goblin tried to jump of Flexible's back, and knock Helena off. But, Helena kicked her heels in Flexible's sides, and they got away from that goblin too.

Three goblins were blocking the finish line. Flexible was trapped!  Helena waved her wand and a lightening bolt appeared, knocking two of the goblins down. Flexible reared yet again, knocking the third goblin away.

But then, blue sparkles appeared, covering the finish line. It was Jack Frost!! "Oh-No," said Helena, gasping in horror. "He's the one that told the goblins to steal my helmet. And, he's after it again!," she said. But, Jack Frost didn't want the helmet. He wanted Flexible. He wanted to capture Flexible in his ice castle, and keep him there forever because was winning, and Jack Frost wanted his horse, Icicle, to win.

Helena, Samantha and Penny put their magic together, rolling it into a round ball. They threw it at Jack Frost. When it hit him, he disappeared.

Flexible ran toward the finish line, and crossed it. Second place behind Springtime. Icicle was in fourth. At the last moment, Scott, a brown and black horse beat Icicle. Springtime beat everyone.

But, what happened next? Icicle changed. He wasn't really Jack Frost's pony. It was Sparkle, Penny pony. Jack Frost must have kidnapped Sparkle when Penny wasn't looking. Thank goodness we have him back!

Flexible was having a hard time breathing, for he had never put in so much effort into anything like this before.  He mostly just runs in the pasture, eats tasty clover, and stays in the stall, eating oats and speaking to his friend, Rosco the mouse.

But after a few minutes, he was okay. What really made him unhappy was that he came in second.  "Samantha," said Flexible. "I let you down. I came in second. I lost." he said.  Samantha came over and said, "Sometimes it's okay to lose. And, you didn't let me down, or fairy land down, or Penny or Helena down. Instead you knocked Jack Frost down," she said with a smile. "Great job!" she said, handing him an apple.

"Let's go home," said Penny. "Yeah," said Helena. "Wait," said Samantha. She waved her wand, and there were three pink bags. The one in Samantha's hand said, "Samantha," the one in Penny's hand said, "Penny," and the one in Helena's hand said, "Helena."  Inside were one peanut butter sandwich, a chocolate chip cookie, and crackers for each of them.

Back in England, Samantha whispered to Flexible, "Good night, You are a winner because you tried your very best" and twinkled away into the starry night.

The End.

Flexible's Adventures I, The Horse Show in Ireland.

Once upon a time, there was a silver Bay Mustang horse named "Flexible."  Flexible lived in a really cool, new barn in England.

Once when Flexible was out in the pasture, she heard someone singing. Suddenly, a fairy flew out of the bushes, right up to her.  "Flexible," she said, "Do you want to go on an adventure with me to Ireland?" "Sure," Flexible said, "I'd LOVE to!"

Then, the fairy said, "Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Samantha, the show horse fairy. There is a horse show in Ireland, and I'd like you to come. You look like the perfect show horse!"

The next day, Samantha showed up in the pasture again. "How about we pack up for our adventure now. We can leave tomorrow." "Sure," said Flexible. So, with a wave of her wand, Samantha made Flexible fairy size, and took Flexible to fairy land so they could pack up their things.

"Hi, King Orbion and Queen Tatiana," Samantha said as she curtseyed to them.  "This is Flexible. I want to take him to Ireland to enter the national horse jumping competition," introduced Samantha.

"I'd like Flexible to meet Penny the Pony fairy," Samantha said, pointing to a beautiful fairy with golden hair, two piggy tails, and a bronze cowgirl vest. Penny had on blue jeans tucked into black boots with a twinkling pink wand. "This is Sparkle, Penny's pony," pointed out Samantha. Samantha pointed to a beautiful white pony with a silver mane and tail, combed to perfection.

"Can you help us pack up for Flexible's trip?" whispered Samantha to Penny.  "We can take the pony trailer," said Samantha. "Sure, you can also take Sparkle. Sparkle can help Flexible if he gets in trouble," said Penny. "Great!" said Samantha.

"OK, Flexible. Let's go to Penny's secret pony place to get your supplies," said Samantha.  Penny and Samantha led Flexible to a tiny cabinet in the back of the crowd of fairies.

Penny pulled out a leather bag.  "Flexible, would you like to have some food for the trip? I have a little extra from Sparkle's early breakfast. I'm sure he'll share!" indicated Penny. "Sure," said Flexible. "I'm sure I'll be hungry during the trip to Ireland." Next, Penny pulled out a little jar. "You may need some extra magic. I have this jar of pony magic that can help you during the competition" she said. "OK," said Flexible. "All my life, I've dreamed of being a magical pony. I've heard all about unicorns and Pegasuses." So, Penny packed the magic jar into a little green backpack with all of Flexible's other necessities.

"Now that we're done packing, let's go to the magical pony trailer," said Samantha. "Let our adventures begin!" "Wait," said Penny, "Can I come?" "Sure," said Samantha, "Come on!"

Into the trailer they went.  Penny put little socks on Flexible's legs. "These are to make sure you don't get hurt if there's a bump," she said. Then, Penny waved her wand and a red halter appeared in her hands.  She snapped it on to Flexible's muzzle, and clipped chains to the halter. "These will prevent you from sliding back and forth. They will hold you sturdy in one place," she said. Then Samantha plopped into the driver seat, and Penny flew down beside her. Off they went.

After a little while of driving, Samantha said, "I'm hungry. Do you think we should get ourselves some food, and give some to Flexible too?" "Yes," said Penny. Penny waved her wand and two green paper bags appeared in Samantha's hands. One of the bags said "Penny."  She handed that one to Penny.  And the one that said, "Samantha," she kept for herself. She handed an apple back to Flexible.

When they arrived in Ireland, they took a taxi to the horse show.  It begins tomorrow, but they wanted to be there a day early to get ready.

Suddenly, they saw a judge running. Samantha and Penny waved their wands over themselves, and they were no longer fairy size.  And, their wings disappeared. They quickly tucked their wands in the pocket of the black leather coats they were wearing. But, they still had to make Flexible big too.  "Quickly," Samantha told Flexible, "Hide in my pocket. We'll go to the stables, then I'll turn you back to real size."

Samantha and Penny ran through the windy, cold evening to the stables.  When they got to the cozy stables, Samantha and Penny got into an empty stall. Samantha got Flexible out of her pocket. He trotted on her hand, while Penny waved her wand over him.  Suddenly, he was big again.

Penny asked a judge, "Can I please ride in the horse show?" "Sure, if you have a horse," said the judge. "Sure I do! His name is Flexible." "Great," said the judge. "You better get him ready for the show. The competition is tomorrow!"  Penny and Flexible headed into the arena to practice.

Once practice was done, Penny waved her wand and a green paper bag appeared in her hand.  It said, "Penny and Flexible."  Penny took out an apple and a ham and tuna sandwich. She gave Flexible the apple, and ate the ham and tuna sandwich herself. "Yum," she said after she ate the last piece of ham, gobbling it up.

The day of the horse show finally arrived. When it was their turn, Penny told Flexible, "Wait. I have once last piece of magic for you. It's the magic that you will have invisible wings, that are silent too. You'll fly over the jumps so that you don't knock anything down, and win first place. I just need to make sure I don't fall off." Then, Penny kicked him in the side, and he cantered into the ring.

"Where's Samantha?" Penny asked Flexible before they began.  Flexible remembered the magic and sniffed at Penny's green backpack. "Oh, the magic. You need the magic to talk!" Penny took out the jar and sprinkled some magic dust on Flexible. "Samantha's in the bathroom," said Flexible. "I think she just came out, and is talking to the judge to see if she can watch."

"Seat 54," the judge said, handing Samantha a piece of paper. Samantha handed him money for the ticket.

The first jump was pretty easy. It was only three poles high.  The second and third ones were higher. But, Flexible flew over those too, without knocking down any poles.  Then, the final jump. It was eight to ten poles high! But, he flew over that one too. At the end, the judge announced, "Flexible, that amazing horse. He went over all the jumps without knocking any poles down. He even made it over that last jump, which was ten poles high!"

"Flexible, you won!" Penny said, as she galloped with him over to the winner's stand and grabbed the trophy. "I knew you were going to win. I knew you were a great horse the first time I saw you in fairy land."

"Oh-oh, where's Samantha?" Penny said, turning to empty seat 54 in the stands. "Samantha went to the coffee stand to get some coffee. Look, there she is," Flexible said pointing his hoof to Samantha.

"Samantha!" Penny cried. "We won first place!" "I see," said Samantha. "You were very good at riding. Let's get Flexible back to his family now. They must be wondering where he is." "Don't worry," Penny said, "I put a magical spell on them so they would sleep until her returns." "Great, the trailer's ready," said Samantha. "Let's go back to merry ole England."

And they all ate an apple on the way home, except Flexible, who had carrots instead.

The End.

Epilogue.

Flexible landed in England safe and sound. As she left, Samantha whispered that she'd return to take Flexible on another adventure soon - a race in New York.
