Flexible's Adventures II, A Race in New York

Once upon a time, there was a silver Bay mustang named "Flexible." He loved magic, but mostly fairies.

One day, when Flexible was in the pasture, a fairy was singing in the bushes. She asked him to go to Ireland with her. He did, and he was in a horse show there...and won! When they came back to England, the fairy, who was named Samantha, told him she would take him to race in New York next.

Today, Flexible was grazing in the pasture again, when Samantha, the show horse fairy, flew out of the huckleberry bushes. "Remember I told you we would go to a race in New York?" she said. "Let's go to fairy land to pack up," she shouted loudly. Samantha quickly waved her wand, and they were off to fairy land..again.

"Can I take Flexible to New York to race?" Samantha asked King Oberon for permission.  "Yes," he said. "But you will have to get help again," said Queen Tatiana. "How about Penny the pony fairy come with you to help," she said. "She helped you last time, didn't she?" said the queen. "Yes, she did," said Samantha.

"Maybe Helena the horseback riding fairy can help you too," said the queen as she pointed her wand to a beautiful fairy wearing tan pants tucked into big black boots up to her knees. She wore a sturdy brown riding helmet with a picture of a horse on it. "That riding helmet is very special," said Queen Tatiana. "It makes sure that everything in the stables is reined in," she said. A couple days ago, the goblins stole the helmet for themselves. Thankfully, two girls, Ivy and Julie found the goblins, bumped them in a wastebasket, and retrieved the helmet. All while he was riding a horse named "Mischief."

"Let's not waste time," said the Queen. "Why don't you three go to the tack room and pack up," she said. "Sure," said Samantha, leading Flexible, Penny and Flexible to the back of the quiet barn behind the castle.

Helena opened the door to a little staircase, went up the stairs, and into a room. Inside was riding helmets, halters, reins, saddles, treats, and luggage carriers for travels. There were even keys to a trailer, and keys to a magic bus, and magical airplane too.

Helena took out a pink backpack covered in pictures of horses - black horses, brown horses, white horses, horses of every shape and color. Some were running, some were jumping, some were galloping, cantering and trotting.

"Let's put in give apples, three carrots, three ham and tuna sandwiches and a ticket to the coffee bar," said Helena. "Now, let's go to the magical trailer," said Samantha. And off they went.

Helena and Samantha went into the front seats, while Penny stayed in the back with Flexible. Soon they were flying in the magical trailer from England to New York.

"From England to New York, from England to New York, from England to New York. That's where we're going, from England to New York," sang Samantha. "We're flying through the air, we're flying through the air, that's what we're doing, we're flying through the air," Samantha continued.

They landed in New York. Just like before, they were a day early so they could have time to settle in.

They transformed back to real size and led Flexible to the grooming room to clean him up.  When they were done, they led him to his stall and filled his food buckets, with oats and fresh water. Then, they put a fresh blanket from a blanket pile to make sure he wasn't cold.

"Let me ride him this time," said Helena. "All right," said Samantha, "But, next time, I'll ride."

The day of the race arrived. Samantha and Helena tacked Flexible up, and Helena got on. They cantered onto the field, and got into the starting gate, number 27. Samantha and Helena got their own seats. "107 and 108," said the manager, pointing to two seats in the back row.

And, they're off! Flexible ran and ran. Flexible was winning! But, then Flexible saw a goblin; he was trying to knock Helena off his back.  Flexible reared at the goblin, but then focused back on the race again.  Flexible was nose to nose with Springtime,  white horse with black spots.  But, Flexible was getting tired. Springtime passed him.

Up ahead, the finish line was getting closer and closer. Another goblin appeared in front of him! Flexible reared at the goblin, knocking the goblin off his feet.  The goblin tried to jump of Flexible's back, and knock Helena off. But, Helena kicked her heels in Flexible's sides, and they got away from that goblin too.

Three goblins were blocking the finish line. Flexible was trapped!  Helena waved her wand and a lightening bolt appeared, knocking two of the goblins down. Flexible reared yet again, knocking the third goblin away.

But then, blue sparkles appeared, covering the finish line. It was Jack Frost!! "Oh-No," said Helena, gasping in horror. "He's the one that told the goblins to steal my helmet. And, he's after it again!," she said. But, Jack Frost didn't want the helmet. He wanted Flexible. He wanted to capture Flexible in his ice castle, and keep him there forever because was winning, and Jack Frost wanted his horse, Icicle, to win.

Helena, Samantha and Penny put their magic together, rolling it into a round ball. They threw it at Jack Frost. When it hit him, he disappeared.

Flexible ran toward the finish line, and crossed it. Second place behind Springtime. Icicle was in fourth. At the last moment, Scott, a brown and black horse beat Icicle. Springtime beat everyone.

But, what happened next? Icicle changed. He wasn't really Jack Frost's pony. It was Sparkle, Penny pony. Jack Frost must have kidnapped Sparkle when Penny wasn't looking. Thank goodness we have him back!

Flexible was having a hard time breathing, for he had never put in so much effort into anything like this before.  He mostly just runs in the pasture, eats tasty clover, and stays in the stall, eating oats and speaking to his friend, Rosco the mouse.

But after a few minutes, he was okay. What really made him unhappy was that he came in second.  "Samantha," said Flexible. "I let you down. I came in second. I lost." he said.  Samantha came over and said, "Sometimes it's okay to lose. And, you didn't let me down, or fairy land down, or Penny or Helena down. Instead you knocked Jack Frost down," she said with a smile. "Great job!" she said, handing him an apple.

"Let's go home," said Penny. "Yeah," said Helena. "Wait," said Samantha. She waved her wand, and there were three pink bags. The one in Samantha's hand said, "Samantha," the one in Penny's hand said, "Penny," and the one in Helena's hand said, "Helena."  Inside were one peanut butter sandwich, a chocolate chip cookie, and crackers for each of them.

Back in England, Samantha whispered to Flexible, "Good night, You are a winner because you tried your very best" and twinkled away into the starry night.

The End.
